One ringy dingy… no wait… no ringy dingy…

Filed under: General, Technology — John @ 7:25 pm

So tonight I arrived home from work, after making a slight detour to the hardware store to pick up some things to work on a Halloween prop.  After I started work on the prop, the phone rang… or did it… odd, the phone in the kitchen didn’t ring… the phone in the livingroom didn’t ring…  but I did hear one phone ringing…  After careful examination, I discovered the phones on the newer runs were all dead.  Only the phones on the runs 20+ years old worked.  I was afraid that the doorbell phone system had died and in its death killed the new runs…  Palley had the solution though, “Hey Jerry mowed today, do you suppose he hit a wire?”  OF COURSE!!!  The new runs come in via a different newer cable running in an area that he would have had to trim, while the old lines come in on the porch.  I ran out, and sure enough in the newly trimmed long grass along the side of the house lay the phone cable, ripped from its staples and stripped in a few spots.  So, I grabbed my telecoms tool box, and the box of cat5. (it’s really nice having the tools for different jobs all sorted into separate tool boxes)  Less than an hour later, I had ran a whole new line for both the main number and my old modem number back tot he punch down block in the house and phone service was restored.    The new wire is stapled up much better than the old line (something I had been meaning to fix for years) and the phone quality is crystal clear.

Halloween

Filed under: General, Halloween, Holidays — John @ 10:48 pm

Yes, it’s June… Yes, I’m thinking about Halloween…

I’m thinkign this year, as a bit of a change up… why not do a pirate themed display…

I coudl possibly turn the porch into a pirate ship…

the skeletons are all easliy dressable as pirates….

i could possibly even turn the lawnmower into a dinghy…  make some cannons… make a fake ship front to stand up in front of the hedges…  make a crows nest for the roof of the porch… use whit painters tarp in place of the black plastic i use for light blocking for the ghost…. give the ghost a ships wheel…  I could possibly even turn the ghost 90 degrees to make it look correct, even if i dont it might work… I have the ramp to use for “walking the plank” or at least as a boarding ramp… God knows I have enough pirate stuff…   I could slap a bandanna and eye patch on the puppet and replace one hand with a hook…   I may have to sketch this out and see what it looks like…  It might be fun, and put a bit of new life into the display…

hmm…

Anyone have any thoughts?

The sales call that wasn’t

Filed under: General, The Duh! File, Work Stories — John @ 3:15 pm

I just received a rather insane phone call.  Company names have been omitted to prevent me from getting sued, the callers name was the name he gave me in classic telemarketing fill in the blank format.
When I answered the phone I was greeted in a very thick Middle-Eastern type accent.

Caller:   “Good day Mr Wohlers, my name is __jim__ from *really big software company*

Caller:   “I am calling to see if I can help you with anything related to *really big software company’s flagship product* in your business today”

I found myself thinking, ‘Huh, a new twist… ok, I’m game…’

Me: “Uh.. Ok…”

Caller:   “I show here that you do already use *flagship product* in your business”

Me: “Yes, it’s an embedded product licence provided by our library vendor”

Caller:  “oh yes very good… yes the *flagship product* embedded license, very good…”

silence…

Me: “Ok… Um…”

Caller: “yes, so is there anything that I may help you with?”

Me: “uh…. I don’t know that there is…” (Quick John think! think! think!) “oh wait, Yes… Can I connect to the embedded *flagship product* using *whiz bang technology*?”

Caller:  “ok. Yes very good. Thank You.”

HUH?  what wait… huh…????

Caller: “So is there anything else that I can help you with today?”

Me: “uh… I guess not no…”

Caller: “ok, thank you”

At that point I hung up, slightly confused and yet chuckling to myself…

Babylon 5: The Lost Tales

Filed under: General — John @ 9:25 am

Today I ordered the first DVD in what is hopefully going to be a set of DVDs of “Babylon 5: The Lost Tales”

I’m really looking forward to this, and I suspect JMS won’t disappoint in quality of story, and production. I have watched the trailer and it’s funny, the minute the music started swelling I started to get that old feeling of anticipation I would get each week at the beginning of a new episode.

The Laundromat

Filed under: General, On the Road — John @ 3:19 pm

Well, at the moment our washer has decided to develop amnesia.  It has forgotten how to spin the water out of the clothes.   It pumps the tub dry, and does the rest of the washing ok… but just doesn’t spin things out.    It is under warranty, so it will get fixed, unfortunately it must be washing machine repair season or something.  The repair technician cannot get here until after the 4th of july…   ARRRGH… So until that time, I have to load up the car full of laundry, and make the trip to the local laundromat.

In some regards I do like using the laundromat… Where it would normally take me all day to do all of the laundry, I can get the entire task done in around 2 hours.  I like that.  Instead of having to wait for one washer to finish to start the next load, I simply put the next load in the next washer, and repeat until all washing is started at the same time.  The same thing goes for drying. A couple loads in this dryer, a couple in this dryer, and wait.   When sorted properly I can even time the drying so that I’m done folding the lightweight items before the jeans and towels are done.    It seems so much more efficient.

The downside of this arrangement, aside form the added cost, is the people. Read on…

It’s wierd to be me

Filed under: Fun & Games, General — John @ 1:21 pm

I swear I live a weird life…

We went for Chinese food to the newly opened restaurant down the road from work.   The food is average, we called ahead so it was ready when we got there.  When we finished we opened our fortune cookies.  My fortune read:

“Everything will now come your way.”

When we had all read our fortunes we notices there were extra cookies, so we divvied them up again.  Once the other fortunes had been read, I opened mine, and it read:

“Everything will now come your way.”

No one else got a duplicate… what the heck… and why exactly is everything coming my way?   If the universe is constantly expanding then does that mean I live in the outer limits?

ARRRRGH!!!

The way this is supposed to work is that you type in “your name needs” into google to see what you really need…  The 1st hit is supposedly it…

Wow Google, thanks…  Ok, so  lets say the quotes cause that answer to be tossed out…

Sprecher Makes BBQ?

Filed under: General, On the Grill — John @ 2:53 pm

Tonight I plan on grilling ribs.  I am always looking for something new to try on whatever I grill.  I happen to love to use rubs on things, and thought I might rummage through my collection of sauces and rubs to see what I had.  I couldn’t find any dry rubs left.  Huh…  Can’t imagine how I let that happen.  Fortunately the grocery store in Sandwich,  “Art’s”  always has a really good selection of seasonings, herbs, etc… Thankfully Wal-Mart has NOT put them out of business.  Its a little store, and things are stacked nearly to the ceiling, but I find that adds to the charm. Besides, you NEVER know what you might find there if you just keep looking.  Today was no exception.  I wandered the store for a good half hour, and found a number of rubs, I picked up a couple and continued to wander.  As I did I spied another area of seasonings I had never noticed before.  This section contained a whole host of assorted BBQ sauces I’d never heard of, and so I started examining them.  As I did I discovered a bottle with the name Sprecher on it, and was surprised.  “Sprecher makes BBQ sauce!?!?!?… OOOOOOH WANT!”  So I bought a bottle. I have opened it, and WOW! YUM!!!  The ribs are now sitting in the BBQ sauce, the idea of using a dry rub long since passed from my mind…  yum yum yum yum yum…

Brushwacked

Filed under: General — John @ 12:52 pm

Ugh…  My arms are tired…   I just spent the morning clearing out brush, and trimming up overgrown hedges.   I cannot believe how much crap has grown up on the property in under a year.  Last year all through faire season I did a little yard work at least one night a week.  I had the place pretty well trimmed up, and looking better than it has in years.   Today I decided before faire starts, I jolly well better get back at it and get all the undergrowth and newly sprouted scrub trees cut down.  I swear, you would think that someone went through the yard with miracle grow this past year.  There were trees everywhere.  Not just little sprouts of trees, but 5 and 6 foot tall beasts.   Geeez!  I swear to god mulberry trees are alien lifeforms that land overnight and take root.

Anyway, my arms are tired, scratched and dirty… but in front of the house there is now a pile of brush the size of my car.   It contains,  Buckeye trees, elm trees, walnut trees, mulberry trees, maple trees, forsythia, honeysuckle, thistle, grape vine, and a few other viney weeds that I don’t know the name of.

Anyone need random brush for anything?

So long Mr Wizard

Filed under: General, Technology — John @ 8:21 am

I learned this morning that Mr. Wizard has passed away. I am saddened by this news. I always LOVED his show, and credit him with a lot of my fascination with technology, and science. What an amazing man he was. With the two separate shows he managed to inspire two generations. He will be missed.  DVDs of both shows are available at: http://www.mrwizardstudios.com/
My favorite experiments on “Mr Wizard’s World” had to be:

  • The vacuum experiment. This is the one where he sent the kid up a tall building to suck the grape juice up the straw to demonstrate that lungs couldn’t produce enough vacuum to do it. And then he showed that a vacuum pump could also not do it.
  • I also loved any of the surface tension experiments. Lycopodium powder was just so cool…

Other memorable experiments:

  • The demonstration of the light pen on a computer.
  • The amount of water actually present in snow.
  • Cleaning silver using aluminum and salt. (I’m pretty sure thats where I learned that trick)
  • The mousetrap nuclear fission demonstration
  • How pulleys work
  • How sprinklers work

Add your favorite experiments to the comments!

So that’s what I look like

AHHHHHHHHHHH So Quiet… To Quiet…

Filed under: General — John @ 8:44 pm

Ok… I came down with something over the weekend….  Seems similar to my usual sinus mess, except this one added a new twist.  From 3 pm until about 10 am this morning my right ear was driving me crazy.  Now, those that know me at all know my ears are incredibly sensitive to sound. I can frequently identify people as they approach just by their breathing patterns and footfalls. Hearing conversations across a room is normal for me…  It’s jsut a part of life I’m just used to.   Now, starting at 2 pm yesterday, my hearing started to diminish in my right ear, and the ear felt weird…  by 3pm it felt like it was full of water and my hearing was greatly diminished.   No I supose it really wasn’t much different than “normal” hearing, but for me it was freaky.  I walked around the library and on my left side I could hear at my normal levels.. foot falls… conversations… doors opening, closing, etc…  on my right side…  it was quiet…  Occasional noises registered, but they had to be decently loud.  It was really quite creepy…  It didn’t really hurt, it was more like my ear had been filled with water.

After work things started humming in that ear, and i started to have a touch of dizzyness.  At that point I decided I was probably working on some sort of inner ear infection…
Thankfully after a nights rest, some sinus meds, and a trip to the Dr. things are beginning to return to my version of normal.   I can once again hear at a pretty good distance, and things no longer seem muddled. No ringing, except when the phone goes off, or when an incandescent light bulb first comes on with a dimmer.
I won’t even pretend to imagine what it’s like for someone to go deaf, but just that little diminished level of my hearing made me appreciate what I have that much more.  I hope I won’t complain about the drawbacks as much anymore either.  (High pitched noises still hurt like hell, no getting around that)

St Louis

Filed under: Fun & Games, General, Renaissance — John @ 11:39 am

Wow am I tired…

It was a very long weekend.  I left early from work Friday,  to head to St Louis for the closing weekend of the St. Louis Renaissance Festival.  Overall it was a good time.  Saturday was a hot one, and Sunday rained off and on all day.  The drive down wasn’t bad, I took me just about 5 hours, I had planned on meeting up with seeliejon on the road, but due to some stupidity on my part, and some semis in the way, I couldn’t get off at the planned rest stop.  Instead, I ended up meeting up with Ray while on the road.

After we arrived in St. Louis we checked in and proceeded to hold a cookout behind the hotel. Brats, veggie burgers, pasta salads, and assorted chips and things.  After it started getting dark, and buggy some of us went up and hung out in lifeonwrys hotel room goofing around until after 11 pm.

Saturday a was a bit of a scorcher, and like Bristol on such days, the patrons seemed to be in a daze… They were interested mostly in beer, and not much else.   I managed to get a few laughs out of people  by offering them great deals on shady seating.  “Today only! Free shady seating to people wearing __insert item of clothing here____”   “Act now and I will even throw in a Seelie Court show”

After faire a ton of us went to a local Chinese Buffet.   The food was decent, the service wasn’t terrible, but they really had no clue how many of us were there, and subsequently decided 5 people left without paying.
Sunday, on my way to the faire I was stopped by the local police. I was of course in full garb already… I have to wonder what the initial thoughts of the officer were when he looked in the car and saw me…  Thankfully he was very friendly, and decided to not give me a ticket as long as I promised to be more careful about my speed. We exchanged pleasantries, discussed the faire and the weather a bit and then he left.
The overall mood Sunday seemed melancholy.  Many of the cast  had attended the cast party the night before and had over indulged.  Toss in rain off and on all day and the fact that it was closing day, and things just seemed to be pretty low energy.  Getting audience to show up at te shows was hard too.  I did have one highlight interaction moment.  I saw a playful looking couple waling along away from the stage, and  decided to play with them.  I crept up along side them, and matched their pace in my pirate saunter…  I didn’t say a single word, just had a goofy smirk on my face… The guy and his lady kept shooting glances over at me… finally she snickered… so i chimed in to the guy, “So, where we goin?”  “I’m just following her…” “Oh really? So If I was to say turn her around like this (I moved over and gave her the opportunity to stop me, she grinned and didnt, so I turned her around 180 degrees) , you would continue to follow her?”  “Yeah, I guess so…”  “Great!”  So I steered her haphazardly towards the stage making him follow in nonsensical patterns… She was laughing the whole way… Finally I sat them down at the stage,a nd they actually sat and watched a few songs.   A little heavy handed I suppose, but they thought it was funny, it amused me, and when they did leave they saw me, grinned and waved bye.

The rest of the day progressed pretty slow going… few patrons… even fewer interested in the shows… just a lot of the “I’m wet and cold…” crowd.  By closing my feet were really starting to bother me and the general “its closing day” mood had pretty much permeated everything.
Over all it was a decent weekend though.  Got to hang out some with friends who  I hadn’t seen since last season, and other friends who decided on a whim to come down this weekend, and of course the friends I went with.

Port Washington Pirate Festival Highlights

Filed under: Accomplishments, Fun & Games, General, On the Road, Renaissance — John @ 8:02 pm

This past weekend was the Port Washington Pirate Festival. I, and a number of friends, volunteered to add some character to the street this year, as opposed to just attending last year. I have to say, I had an absolute BLAST.

The festival is growing quite well, and is certainly received well by the town and its inhabitants. New this year was a Fireworks show that really seemed to draw out a lot of people, despite the rainy weather.

I think I could hear the phrase “Look mommy!!! A REEEEEAALLLLL PIRATE!!!!” gushed in utter delight from a child a thousand more times and never come close to getting tired of it. I can’t even begin to count the number of pictures that I posed for with families.

Off and On both days Sarah and I teamed up to wander the lanes and play with the patrons. Read on for details
