A/C Maint

Filed under: General, Out There — John @ 3:47 pm

I disassembled my A/C for my bedroom, and found that the slot that is suposed to allow the water that develops on the inside coils to drain to the outside was clogged with mud.  There was also a lot of mud in the pan in the back of the unit.  Note to self, clean the unit a little more frequently. This would explain why the water was suddenly draining to the inside of the house instead of the outside.   I cleaned out the mud as best as I could and made a tiny modification to the 1/16″ slot for water to drain, that is I made the slot larger.  I’m hoping this will better allow dirt etc to work its way outside where it shouldn’t clog up the drain as easily.   I think after the heat wave is over I will remove the unit for a longer period of time and see if I can use the air compressor to better clean some areas that I couldn’t reach.

Dave Day

Filed under: General — John @ 10:17 pm

Happy Dave day to one and all.

It may seem a little strange to some to celebrate Dave day still, w/o Dave but I think for all of us who did it is extreemly important.  I’m quite certain Dave approves of it as well.  ?He pretty much told us so today.

We had just been discussing some of the odd events that people had experienced after Dave passed when out of nowhere, the sky clouded over and the temp dropped about 15 degrees.  Then we were hit with a nice cool rain for a few minutes.   When the rain passed we happend to look up in the sky to the east of the house.   There, a little faint, but still as plain as day was the longest full rainbow I have ever seen in my life.

This was the 1st rainbow his parents have seen since his passing. A number of the rest of his friends, myself included,  have seen them at times when they were really missing Dave.
I think today was quite the appropriate time for it as they finally managed to sell his car today as well.  To me it seemed very much like a “thank you”, and “I love you”.

Note to self…

Filed under: General — John @ 10:08 am

Note to self:  When the phone rings at 2 a.m. do not answer it.

This call was my aunt, who was moved back to a nursing home Sunday (different place, much newer, and apparently nicer), calling to ask me to bring her her oxygen hose from home when I get a chance today.   Or at least I think that’s what she was asking, frankly it was 2 a.m. on a  Sunday after faire and I wasn’t all that coherent.  She could well have told me that “Nazi pengins were invading Saskatchewan in clown cars” and I would have had much the same response of “Ugghhh.. Uh.. Huh… mmmm… ughh…”

mod_perl update

Filed under: General, Technology, Work Stories — John @ 12:22 am

I didn’t get a chance to post any progress reports on my mod_perl experiments.  Friday at 4:20 I managed to perform a succesful single sign on to our catalog thanks to mod_perl.    I need to do some clean up, and a little optimization probably but so far it really works.

It may be a bit round about, but the over all gist is this:

If you have logged in on our site to any of the existing Cold Fusion, or PHP based login required areas, the user credentials are stored within the php session.  (Yes, I have PHP sharing data back and forth in cold fusions session space)

Later when a request comes in to the catalog mod_perl does a quick read of the PHP session space via SOAP to check to see if the user has previously logged in, if they have and their session has not expired, perl sets the environment variable needed by the catalog and the catalog acts as if the user has logged in on it as well.

I’ll definitly have to do some checking for security flaws, but I don’t think it should be vulnerable to any form of attack.  Communication between PHP and Perl is internal, as is the communication from perl to the environment space.   There isn’t anything that has any contact with the user at all except the session id for PHP, and that I am doing validity tests on.

Tired… Content…

I’m back at the house safe.  The drive was mostly uneventfull, I was nearly ran over by an edys ice cream truck, but you know, if you have to be killed by a semi… What better semi to be killed by than one loaded with ice cream…

I’ll post bristol notes tomorrow… ok, later today since its past midnight.

TGIFT

Filed under: General, Work Stories — John @ 4:27 pm

Thank God It’s Four Thirty…  GAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!

Must leave before I hurt someone…

On a stormy night…

Filed under: General — John @ 8:06 am

I don’t know if it was the storm, or stress or what but man what a night.   I don’t normally recall any dreams if I even have them but when I do there is usually a reason. Usually.   Last night I drempt off and on all night.  They weren’t particularly intersting dreams or anything, most of them had to do with my grade school library.  For some reason at one point I was going through things in an office that doesn’t actaully exist, that I’ve never seen before.  As I was rummaging through the office, I came across one of slide things for the old System-80 machines. I also found a very sleek looking  3.5 inch external floppy drive for an apple ][  that I recognised immediatly. That particular drive had always been in the librarians office on shelf on the wall.   At that point someone I supposedly knew but couldn’t recognise because she kept jsut out of my line of sight came into the non-existant office and was commenting on how she hadn’t seen me in years.  We talked for a while and laughed about a few things, (I can’t remember what) and then she left.
Later I was somehow trying to convince the colleges CIO to donate our old P.C.s to this same library to replace their 386 pc’s (that they never had, at least while I was there anyway) because they tried installing windows XP on them and networking them and couldn’t.    On the wall where one of the shelves should have been was an enormous wall plate with around 30 orange  ethernet jacks in it (yes, when i dream it’s in color).  At that point I got tired of trying to convince the CIO to do this so I looked up at the exit sign over the door with its slightly burnt red gel and woke myself up.

I guess as far as dreams go for me this one wasn’t to bad.   Oh well, time to get to work learning about mod_perl.

mod_perl

well it looks like mod_perl is my next conquest.   It seems to be about the only thing I can use to get apache to do what I want it to do for the library catalog…   Should be fun…

BRF Weekend Two – Really Long

Filed under: Renaissance — John @ 11:07 am

Weekend number two has melted away.    Saturday was one of the hottest days at Bristol that I can remember. I probably lost the brain cells that could remember hotter days in the heat though.     Yes it was hot, yes it was at times very uncomfortable, but I still had a great time.
