All is calm, All is bright…

Filed under: General — John @ 11:30 pm

Well ok, perhaps not ALL but at least as far as datloss goes. As of about 45 minutes ago I was able to mount the recovered data file created by dd_rescue & dd_rhelp.  When I mounted it, I feared the worst, and expected still that there would be no hope.   I was wrong.   I now have, copying to the new webserver, and copied to my local HDD, _ALL_  of the remaining missing photos.   Thats right… Every last one of them.  All of Four Kingdoms, all of Halloween, all of Christmas 2005, even some pictures from my mothers birthday that I didn’t remember losing.   As far as  troubles  go, this one is now pushed to the level of minor annoyance, and no longer has any control over me.

I learned my lesson… BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP…

Lending a hand…

Filed under: General — John @ 3:04 pm

Todays Aurora Beacon news has a tiny article about Shakespeare day in it.  It seems they went the “A picture is worth a thousand words” route.  One of the pictures is of one of our students standing reading a book of sonnets, the other picture is of the same book of sonnets being held open on the table by a rather fammiliar hand and bracer.  (And I hadn’t yet bit off all my finger nails on that hand… Go figure…)

And I quote…

Filed under: General — John @ 5:30 pm

Well, I was quoted in today’s Kane County Chronicle for Shakespeare day. I wasn’t in the pictures, which is good, they focused on the student particiption as they should. Also, thanks to the writing talents of Kartikay Mehrotra I do not sound like a complete fool… The last few paragraphs of the article titled “Birthday of the Bard” are below:
WCC library employee John Wohlers dressed in a green 16th century suit with a matching cap and leather boots. He said Shakespeare’s value goes far beyond the 38 plays and 154 sonnets he wrote.

Shakespeare created and applied 1,500 words to the English language, such as luggage, assassination and monumental, along with phrases like catching a cold, disgraceful conduct and fair play.

“It’s amazing that that much of a language has been defined because of one person,” Wohlers said. “People were becoming learned at that time which probably has a lot to do with his lasting impact.”

Green suit? Ok… I suppose that is one description for my garb. I’ll have to kepe that in mind the next time I have to go somewhere that a suit is required… MUAHAHAHHAHAHAH

Recovery Update

Filed under: General — John @ 4:57 pm

Well the photo gallery recovery project is progressing pretty well.   I know at the time of the crash I had around 15,600 photos.  When last I checked I had recovered 13,154 and the final DVD was still only about 3/4 done.    I also have a ton of file to re-load that were not in the backup but I do have them.  One set that I know I am missing is the Halloween 2005 pictures, I have a little hope that they MIGHT be still on the other laptop at home.  If they aren’t there is also one possiblitly that they are in the java cache on my mothers computer as we had looked through them a few weeks back.    I’m sure there are other pictures that are lost and gone forever, like this years christmas phots, but I think I can live with that for the most part.  I have not totally given up on being able to access the dead partition on the one partially working drive eitehr and if I do I might just get lucky enough to be able to recover the last few missing images.  One thing I do know.. is fomr now on, before I copy the photos to the server… I WILL burn them to CD JUST IN CASE.

It’s 2:30 on a tuesday… Why am I in garb?

Filed under: General — John @ 2:43 pm

Well, today is Tuesday, its 2:30, I’m sitting at my desk and I’m in full garb. (Well… minus weapons) Why are you in garb you ask? Because today we celebrated Shakepeares Birthday on campus. This was our tenth event. Every year around his birthday, we have a birthday party for Shakespeare. We setup a bunch of tables, lay out tons of Shakespeare stuff, hang posters, and have TONS of cake. The campus choir usually stops over to serenade the students with a few period songs, and there is always a raffle. This year we had representatives from three local papers in taking pictures of us, and asking all sorts of questions. The one reporter was compleetly enamored with me eating cake out of a wooden bowl with a wooden spoon. He took four or five pictures of it UP CLOSE. So in one of the local papers there may well be a shot of half eaten cake in a wooden bowl… Who knew… I also probably talked a little to much to the reporters too so i have no idea what quotes I’ll end up having in the paper. I’m hoping for none… :-) I was being rather goofy (no… me???? Really???) at times when I was begin interviewed. Should be interesting resuts… Oh well, that’s waht they get for having a nut like me involved… Man I’m so not used to my boots again, my feet are tired… (Concreete floors have little in common with nice soft gravel and faire dust)

Morning

Filed under: General — John @ 4:08 am

I can’t believe it is morning already.  I didn’t sleep well last night.  My sleep was plauged by dreams of people attempting to recover passwords on computers.   With each unsuccessful attempt the despair grew ever more heavy.   <sigh>

And so it goes

Filed under: General — John @ 7:43 am

I have broken down and purchased a dedicated server fomr a hosting company.  Running things out of the house, althgouh fun, is to much work, and is causeing me to much worry and greif every time somethign goes wrong.  Not tomention how fricking stupid I am for not making backups of stuff.   I have now installed wordpress, and copied the data over. Gallery will be next on the ajenda, and it will be a much more difficult task i beleive.   This post is also a test to see if the cross posting to LJ is still workign now that I am on a newer version of wordpress.

Tense

Filed under: General — John @ 8:57 pm

I took a nap earlier and woke up just before eight. When I woke up I had this strange sense of urgancy. A sense that there was something I had to do, and had to do right then. I just couldn’t figure out what it was. It’s faded some now but dang I hate it when stuff like that happens.

Back in the Saddle

Filed under: The Duh! File, Work Stories — John @ 10:46 am

Well I have returned to work, which will hopefully return some sense of normality to my life. I arrived to a number of fires, as expected, but so far thigns are working out ok. In true crazy fashion… I’ve been here half a day and the staff are proving to be thier typical source of humor.

Co-Worker (In timid, understanding voice): “So…. How are you doing John…”
Me: “Well, you know I’m coping, and I’m back at work… So things will get back to normal…”
Co-Worker: “Oh… yeah… ” (Excitedly trying to changed the topic) “Hey, Have you lost weight? ”
Me: “Considering I havn’t really eaten much since last Thursday, I would assume yes… I probably have…”
Co-Worker: “Oh that’s great, keep it up! You can tell.”
Me: “Ok, thanks…”

Snicker… Uh… 2 + 2 = 3 right?

FYI: Death and greaving are NOT acceptable Diet plans…

Kindred Spirits

Filed under: General — John @ 6:45 am

Yesterday, before leaving Dave’s parents his dad again looked at me and this time said “He loved you…, You two were Kindred Spirits.”

Kindred Spirit:
You are born in agreement with a kindred spirit. When you meet him, you automatically love him. The two of you, when you meet, feel like you’ve known each other your entire lives. You can go years without talking and never miss a beat when you see each other again. You like the same things, share similar feelings, laugh at the same obscure and nonsensical jokes, find excitement in similar places, and are just different enough that you can like each other even when suffering debilitating bouts of self-hate.

GPS: Geek Positioning System

Filed under: General — John @ 8:25 pm

For well over a year I have been seriously considering purchasing a GPS unit. Keep in mind, its not just any type of GPS unit that I wanted, I wanted one of the models that do the trip planning and show the route maps. It is simmilar to having a mini mapquest in my car. I am notoriosuly bad with directions, and infamous for getting lost. It is my hope that with one of these GPS units I will be better able to find my way here and there.
Last night [info]docz42 and I went to Frys to get the Garmin i5 Streetpilot. New rule conscerning Fry’s Electronics… All geeks must be accompanied by a non geek in order to balance the universe. We arrived around seven and didn’t leave until around nine fourty five. Fry’s closes at Ten. Fry’s did not have the original model I went for, and I should probably have left right then and not stuck around in the store. I kept wandering back to the GPS isle, and finally gave in and after a littel spur of the moment research decided to get a different model. The model I chose was the “Navman iCN 520″. From the descriptions it seemed pretty decent, and had the features I was looking for, as well as some I wasn’t. The jury is still out on performance. I took it with on my whirlwind WI tour today and it missed some really important time saving routes. It HATES rt 26 and will not for any reason route via 26. That ends up adding at least 30 to 40 minutes to a trip to Watertown. On a plus note, it runs windows CE, and there are a number of sites that say they have managed to get it to run other navigation software, so that is always a posibility too.
